BJJ Academies in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts has one of the most distinct BJJ lineages in New England, with Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy serving as the foundational room. The academy was founded in 1995 by Master Roberto Maia — a cousin of Carlos Gracie Jr. who received his black belt from Renzo Gracie in 1994 and is widely credited as the BJJ pioneer of New England. Boston BJJ has reopened in a new location in Bellingham, MA after its long-running Newton home.
Maia's lineage runs through multiple state academies: Mass Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (head instructors mentored by Maia), Boston BJJ Stoughton (Jitu Smith, Maia black belt), Boston BJJ Woburn (Jimmy DelOrfano, 2nd-degree under Maia), and North Shore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Salem (Danny Morera, 4th-degree black belt under Maia, who is now a Coral Belt). South Boston BJJ and BMAC Boston run additional academies in the Boston metro.
