BJJ Academies in United Kingdom.
The UK runs Brazilian jiu-jitsu under UKBJJA — the United Kingdom Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association — formed in 2013 by black belts Dickie Martin, Dave Coles, and Simon Hayes, and recognized in 2021 by the Sports Councils of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland as the official National Governing Body for BJJ. UKBJJA covers 300+ member clubs.
London is the country's competition anchor. The IBJJF runs two annual Crystal Palace events at the National Sports Centre (London International Open in February, London Spring Open in June); the 2026 dates are February 21–22 and June 13–14. The UK is also home to Polaris Pro Grappling — Europe's longest-running large-scale professional grappling event — founded in 2015 by Matthew Benyon and Ben Tong (Scramble) with Gareth Dummer and Lee Jones (Tatami Fightwear); Polaris 1 was held January 10, 2015 at St David's Hall, Cardiff.
Major academies span the country. Roger Gracie Academy is in Hammersmith, West London under 10-time IBJJF black-belt world champion Roger Gracie (ADCC Hall of Fame 2021). Gracie Barra Birmingham (1 Stanhope Street) was the first Gracie Barra academy in Europe — opened 1997 by Mauricio Motta Gomes, passed to Braulio Estima in 2003 (4-time IBJJF World Champion, ADCC Hall of Fame 2021). Carlson Gracie London (Westway, Hammersmith) was founded December 2001 by Wilson Junior, Dickie Martin, and Simon Hayes. Mill Hill BJJ runs out of North London (270 Watford Way), and Glasgow has The Griphouse and Gracie Barra Glasgow under Professor Ricky Gillon.
