BJJ Academies in District of Columbia.
The District of Columbia's BJJ scene runs through a small but established cluster of academies in the federal capital.
Yamasaki Academy DC — part of the broader Yamasaki Academy network founded by Master Mario Yamasaki and Master Fernando Yamasaki (both 6th-degree black belts from São Paulo, Brazil) — has been described as offering the highest level of technique, discipline, and instruction in the DC area; the network spans DC, Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Capital MMA DC runs BJJ, self-defense, and fitness on H St NE on Capitol Hill. Estilo Jiu Jitsu is led by 3rd-degree black belt Luis Pantoja, who has nearly 20 years of teaching and competition experience. Groundworks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Lloyd Irvin Mixed Martial Arts Academy, and Capital Jiu-Jitsu Academy (a Royce Gracie Network school) round out the city's BJJ surface.
