Minnesota's BJJ scene is anchored by the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and Saint Paul). Coach Greg Nelson, a 9th-degree red belt promoted in July 2017 — the second-highest rank in BJJ — is one of the country's most senior practitioners. Nelson's BJJ journey began in 1989 with a private lesson from Master Rickson Gracie before he became a Pedro Sauer student in 1996.
The Cellar Gym in Minneapolis is described as one of the largest martial-arts facilities in the Midwest. St. Paul BJJ Academy anchors the Saint Paul side. Southside BJJ runs another long-established Minneapolis room. Warrior's Cove operates training centers across Saint Louis Park (West Minneapolis), Burnsville (South Minneapolis), and Little Canada (Saint Paul). Higher Ground BJJ runs in White Bear Lake.
