New York is one of the deepest BJJ states in the country, anchored by New York City's two flagship rooms in Midtown Manhattan.

Renzo Gracie Academy at 224 W 30th Street opened in 1996 — Renzo's New York HQ. Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu in Chelsea (250 W 26th Street) opened in September 2009 under multiple-time IBJJF gi and no-gi World Champion Marcelo Garcia (2007 ADCC absolute champion). Both rooms have hosted and produced a who's-who of modern BJJ.

Beyond New York City, upstate New York runs an active BJJ surface. Buffalo Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy operates in western New York alongside Buffalo United Martial Arts and Lake Effect Martial Arts. NOVA Jiu Jitsu in Rochester was founded in 2009. Albany's surface runs through Team Jucão BJJ in Scotia and Clifton Park, plus Atlas Jiu Jitsu's locations across Albany, Glens Falls, and Hudson.
